Christian McEwen is a writer, educator, and cultural  activist. She has edited two anthologies and produced a video documentary (Tomboys!) and a play (Legal Tender: Women & the Secret Life of Money). Her books include World Enough & Time: On Creativity and Slowing Down (2011), Sparks from the Anvil: The Smith College Poetry Interviews (2015), and, in October 2023, In Praise of Listening. Christian grew up in the Borders of Scotland, and now lives in western Massachusetts.

Catherine Arnold is the 2022 winner of the May Sarton New Hampshire Poetry Prize, which Richard won in 2021. Her book, Receipt for Lost Words, recounts a mother’s attempt to understand a world in which her child loses the ability to speak. In the words of the prize’s judge, Rebecca Kaiser Gibson, Catherine “has accomplished nothing less than the embodiment, in words, of wordlessness.”

Catherine and Richard read both from their prize-winning poetry collections and from newer work.


Zoom conversation with author & activist Angel Garcia

As part of Princeton University’s Class of 1979 Authors & Artists series, Richard talked with classmate Angel Garcia, author of The Kingdom Began in Puerto Rico: Neil Connolly’s Priesthood in the South Bronx. Both discussed how they decided to tell these particular stories in these particular ways and how their prior work experiences influenced their writing. They also took questions from the online audience.

Richard read from Not a Soul but Us, fielded questions, and signed books the morning of May 14, 2022 at an outdoor picnic shelter in Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. The event was sponsored by the Center for Existential Studies and Psychotherapy, of which Richard is a core faculty member. Both his dogs were in attendance.
